Well SSB has been running 3 years now and despite constant claims of "I'm definitely going to bring a stunty team next year" there hasn't been a single person who has lived up to that. Johy doesn't count as he brought stunties to the first SSB and hasn't changed his Halflings since.

As such I am creating this mod-paint blog to encourage myself and show off my mediocre talents to the rest of you.

As this is the first post best I outline what my plan is.

Goal - Have 20+ Goblin Minis that look Hardcore. Sure others might consider them a joke but they think they are a contender.

Minis - Majority Rackham Confrontation Samurats with others added, specifically Roll Jordan if they ever get done.

Assembled
2 Temporary Loonies
2 Pogoers
2 Fanatics
12 Gobbos
3 Journey Gobs
2 Temporary Trolls

Nothing Half Assembled
2 Bombers need to be made/purchased

Painted
Completed the following:
NOTHING

Undercoated the following:
12 Gobs
3 Journey Gobs
2 Temp Trolls
2 Loonies
1.5 Fanatics
1 Pogoer

Assembled but unpainted:
Half a Fanatic
Pogoer

Ok, here are some pics of the minis I am planning to use.

Regular Gobbos
Image
Image

I got 5 packs of these puppies reasonably cheap and have managed to get 15 reasonably unique gobbos with head swaps and different side posing.
Swords of course are gone and I am yet to put the shoulder pads on them. I am thinking of only using one shoulder pad per gobbo so that they can be spread out over the Weapon players as well.

The colour scheme I am going with is pretty similar. Striking green for the skin, a strong red for the armor and a washed grey for the clothing.
Not sure what to do with the other extra details like the hair, ying-yangs so feel free to pipe up.

Temporary Trolls

Image

These are going to be my Oni until I can get something better. Again, weapons snips have occurred and even some armswaps to make it look a bit more natural.

"So these are the temp proxies you say? What are you planning to use for realz?" I am glad you asked. I would love to used these guys.
Image
But they are a serious pain in the ass to find nowerdays. Failing them perhaps a War-troll and a Goreth the Massive. Of a RollJordan Japanese-Troll
Image
If it ever gets made.

Pogoer's
Well my regular Pogoer is going to be a gobbo holding onto a squig. There was one I saw on these very forums who did one quite nicely and I am pretty much copying it shamelessly. If we are every at the same comp I will gladly shout that man a pint. (Pint will be the correct size for the state we are in at the time) I am planning on Jap-ifying it a little possibly with a different head or maybe just armour it up a little bit.

My Star Player Pogoer is going to be the Squig Biter mini from JB Demon.
This guy
Image
If you have a spare one lying around I am happy to take it off your hands. Check out my trade thread if you want/expect remuneration for it!

Fanatics
I was fortunate enough to locate a couple of awesome fanatic models from Game Zone.
Image
I Have the top guy with the anvil and the bottom guy squishing a halfling/human thing. First off they are awesome little minis. Secondly I have no idea how they stay up in the air. I have to hold my anvil up with a flightstand and planning to use a flight stand to hold up the other goblin when I figure out hot to set him up.

With the one I have currently set up I had to put him on a 40mm base just to support his anvil and pin his foot (check it out, a full metal mini balancing on the toes of one foot, who thought that was a good idea?)
Any ideas what to do with that empty space? Decapitated player? Ducking Ref? Gimme some ideas.
Also, you will notice they are pretty Night Goblin-ish and not very Japanese. I am hoping when I paint them up all red robed and add some some paraphernalia it will look decent, or at least tie in with the team.

Loonies
My 2 Temps here are a Neomics Chainsaw Gobby and the Sandgroper Chainsaw Gobby. Sandgrope is eventually going to become my score counter. He is so small and cute.

What would I like for my chainsaw? In a word, THIS!
Image
Not sure if this will ever see the light of day but I am seriously hoping it does.

Bombers
Dont have any yet but this is what they are up against in my mind.
Image

This will be awesome when you get it done Vain, loving the concept.

Re the colour scheme, I think your extras (ying yangs, etc) will actual benefit from being as neutral as possible (ie - either black or white). You're using red, green and grey for the models, if you do many more colours you risk overcomplicating the pallette.

I can't wait to play against these guys. I'm not one who's said they will bring a stunty to SSB, and I can guarantee I won't fro 2011, but 2012... maybe. This is inspiring me!

Thanks for the support. I can only hope I can amp up my painting skills to do these blighters justice.

@D_Arquebus - Yeah, middle of last year I found some lady on ebay selling the Samurats for about $11 bucks per pack of three and Dwarven Thermo Warriors for 9 bucks per 3 pack. I bought up big at the time and am glad I did.

Really nice choice of minis. Regarding the fly-stands you couldn't drill the mini to run an armature inside?

You could still do buckets of fireworks for the bomber. Hirst Arts has a mold with tiny buckets. I've got quite a few.

Vain, I can give you Hirst Arts buckets if you want to head down that path. I have bucketloads of them! (Pun intended :D)

Ok, I was assembling a few more gobbos last night and between pinning the arms and stabbing myself in the thumb with both the scalple and the drill I was wondering about the colours.

If I am wanting a nice cherry red what is the best way of doing it?

My current plan is to foundation red the armour, wash of badab black, light brush some lighter red and then highlights in really vivid red. then another very weak wash.

This is Ausbowl so I am sure you all have opinions so gimme and gimme reasons to pick your style.

For red I generally use either Mechrite or Scab Red (GW) followed by successive highlights through to Khadoran Red (P3) then some final edging with GW's orange (sorry, mental blank). I don't tend to bother with any shading unless I'm after really deep shadows and, if so, I'll just go with some shades adding black before highlighting.

I did a lacker-terra cotta red for my saurus the following way:
Dark red foundation from GWS ( mechrite methinks)
Then heavy wash of brown then black in the deepest corners.
I then painted blood red on all edges then once dry lightly dry-brushed all plane surfaces

To get more cherry red I would simply do the same but darker and do shiny reflection specks with white on some edges. Then gloss varnish

Ok, all of my Tournament and League needed players are there. Excellent!

Now for the painting.

Plus another shout-out for anyone who has a Squig Biter star player they no longer want/need.
